5 Things to do when you get to UVic

1 . Before spending hundreds on new textbooks at the bookstore, check out some of the other options available to you:

> There is SUBtext in the Student union Building that sells used textbooks.

> You can also buy used books online at amazon.ca or abebooks.ca.

> The UVic bookstore has a rental program that is pretty neat.

**disclaimer** Make sure that you have the right edition for your course, if you don’t know, shoot your prof an email before you buy.

2. Set up everything that you will need

> Your student card is your ticket to the Victoria Transit System.  If you don’t have a card, you can get one in the Photo ID Center in the lobby of the University Center.  If you just need your card validated again, you can do it at the Photo ID center or at the Info Booth in the SUB.

> If you don’t have a netlink ID, get one soon.  It’s your ID for everything at UVic and comes with an email.  https://netlink.uvic.ca/

3. Explore Campus

> If you haven’t been to UVic before, make sure that you have scoped out the campus.  Check out the different study spots and places to eat.  Knowing where things are will save you a ton of time.

> Spend sometime finding your classes.  Don’t be afraid to ask, just don’t be asking 10 minutes after your class starts. UVic Maps

4. Check out Clubs and Course Union Days

> UVic isn’t all about classes.  Each semester, clubs and course unions set up tables in the Student Union Building to show off what they are doing and to recruit new members.  Joining a club or course union is a great way to meet people from across the campus and with over 150 different groups, you will likely find one that suits you.  If you can’t then you can always start your own – email services@uvss.ca for more info

> List o’ Vikes Clubs

> List o’ Course Unions

5. Come to the resource center (in the SUB) and meet the Board of Directors

> Shameless plug.  Honestly though, stop by and say hi.  The UVSS is here to make your time at UVic a little easier.  If you have questions about UVic, we can usually answer it, and if we can’t then we can point you to someone who does.  We also put on free events throughout the year, stop by and chat, or check out our website www.uvss.ca.

> You can also grab a free agenda while you are here!
